Customs warehousing benefits in the UK

Importers in the UK can now take advantage of customs warehousing at Transmec’s Redditch branch.

Authorisation has been awarded to the whole of the existing 118,000 sq ft (11,000 sq m) warehouse, opening up a host of savings for clients operating in many different sectors.

The big benefit is that customs duty and VAT doesn’t need to be paid until goods leave the customs warehouse. This obviously improves their cash flow and provides flexibility,” explained assistant branch manager, Daniel Holmes.

Many importers send their goods to different destinations at different times while others need to wait on key documentation or carry out further processing. A customs warehouse takes away the cost and time pressures – and the stress!

Goods can also be held indefinitely, well ahead of seasonal peaks in demand, and duty isn’t due at all if goods are subsequently re-exported.”

Obtaining customs warehouse authorisation from HMRC was a natural move for the Redditch depot, which, like Transmec’s other warehouses in London and the North, is already an External Temporary Storage Facility (ETSF).

Approved for customs clearance, an ETSF fast tracks freight movement by enabling imported goods to bypass delays for clearance at ports.

Customs warehousing adds to our wide-ranging support for importers, which includes our in-house customs clearance team,” Daniel added.

All our services are accompanied by high levels of security, plus state-of-the-art systems and record keeping with all the necessary links for reporting to HMRC.”
