Transmec supports young world champion
A young Thai boxing star has realised his dream of becoming world champion after receiving funding from Transmec UK.
George Rowand, 12, was sponsored by Transmec UK to help cover the costs of travelling to the championships in Carrara, Italy at the end of October.
And he returned a double world champion, taking the titles in both the 44kg and 50kg categories in his age group.
“Some of the world’s best competitors were at the championships and I’m absolutely delighted to pick up two gold medals,” said George, who was accompanied by his mum Becci and trainer Kev Dorman.
“I had a fantastic time and am so grateful to Transmec for their generous support.”
Recognised as one of the best junior fighters in the UK, George has been a member of Redditch’s Thaitans Martial Arts Academy since the age of six.
The St Bede’s Middle School pupil trains five times a week and so far has won 30 of his 36 fights. His long-term goal is to fight in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Whilst he’s beaten opponents from Spain, Belgium and Holland who have travelled to the UK, the trip to Italy was his first time abroad.
To help cover the costs, George completed a sponsored triathlon and packed bags at local shops, while his school also organised a cake sale.
Transmec UK will be providing ongoing funding for George while continuing to sponsor Redditch-based motorcycle racer Trystan Finocchiaro.
General manager of Transmec UK, John Simkins, said: “We are extremely impressed by George’s dedication and determination. He has the talent and potential to achieve great results and we’ll be monitoring his progress with interest.”
